Karachi: Pakistan has made its first successful discovery of a new offshore hydrocarbon play, described as a significant development for the country’s energy sector.

According to Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), a significant and unique gas discovery has been made at the Dolphin exploratory well in the operated Sarani Block, located in Sindh’s Sujawal district.

PPL said the discovery marks the first hydrocarbon find in the Chiltan Formation of the Lower Indus Basin from the Jurassic period, opening up new opportunities for oil and gas exploration in Pakistan.

The company said the discovery confirms the presence of a petroleum system in the area and opens a new exploration frontier in onshore marshy areas as well as potentially shallower offshore extensions.

Experts believe the discovery could prove significant for Pakistan’s energy sector and increase the prospects of finding additional gas reserves in the country in the future.
